Elegiac post for a bygone genre of weirdness

Star Wars and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind were kings in 1977, but why did they stop making full length animation movies like this? (quicktime version). And check out the poster art. How cool is that? I miss this genre. What would you even call it? Cult quasi-animated sci-fi fantasy apocalyptical swashbuckler?
