Why are diamonds measured in carats?

Posted 2 years ago by Evan Tishuk

The word "carat" comes from the carob bean which is the fruit of the Ceratonia siliqua tree (native to the Mediterranean and Middle East). These beans were selected because each one weighs exactly the same, 0.2 grams. 142 of these beans make up an ounce. I suppose they can't really be "beans" in the leguminous sense, but let's not split hairs.

Now ya know, "and knowing is half the battle. GI-JOE!"

Why have you suddenly taken an interest in the weight of diamonds? Is someone on the hunt for a ring???? And the reason diamonds are measured in carats is so cartoons can make silly puns involving rabbits and carrots. Other than that, there is no reason.

No, I was reading a book that mentioned the Cullinan diamond that was 3,106 carats and my interest was piqued---that's about 1.3 pounds worth of diamond.

Because I posted it 36 years ago. And because I am bad at math.
